Is Your Head Posture to Blame for Neck Pain
Screen time takes up more and more of our day. From computers to cell phones to in-car displays almost all screens have one thing in common, they require us to look down. This can often lead to neck pain, frequent headaches, and even fatigue. These and other symptoms are caused by something called forward head carriage which is the posture of your neck!
What Is Forward Head Carriage
The average head weighs about 10 pounds when the head and neck are aligned correctly. That is when the opening to your ear is centered over your shoulder. If your head is off center and in front of the shoulder, you have forward head posture, also known as forward head carriage or text neck. For every inch that your head is off center, extra unnecessary weight is exerted on the muscles in your neck and upper back, making them work harder just to keep your head up!
Today’s lifestyle contributes to this condition on almost a constant basis. Workers hunched over their computers all day, children watching television and playing video games, cradling the phone between your ear and your shoulder and driving in the car for long periods of time can all cause forward head posture. WIthout care, this condition can lead to disc compression, numbness, pain, and headaches.
So What Can You Do
When it comes to forward head carriage, consider the following:
- Receive regular chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic care has shown to be effective in improving the function of the neck and reducing pain..
- Get up and stretch every 15-20 minutes if you sit at a desk during the day.
- Limit the amount of time you spend watching television, playing video games, or use your phone.
- Focus more on your posture, making sure you are sitting up straight with your head in an upright position. Your chin should be parallel with the floor.
- Sleep on a cervical pillow to maintain the proper curve in your cervical spine.
